(June 5) Eight members of the Emory University track and field and cross country teams have been named to the ESPN the Magazine/ CoSIDA Academic all-District team, as juniors Steve Dry, Tommy Fyffe, Tyler Faits, Alex Greenhouse, and Charles Meade were named to men’s first team, while Jordan Beall, Melissa Jones, and Katie Sheehan were named to the women’s first team.

(May 27) Lorne McManigle, of the Emory University women’s tennis team, has been nominated as a candidate for the 2008-09 Division III Athlete of the Year, to be presented at the Collegiate Women Sports Awards in June.

EMORY’S MICHAEL GOODWIN WINS NCAA DIVISION III MEN’S SINGLES TOURNAMENT

(May 24) Emory University senior Michael Goodwin defeated Ben Stein of Bates College, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 to win the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Singles Championship on Sunday.  Goodwin, who was seeded fifth in the bracket, became the first player in the history of the Emory men’s tennis program to win an individual national championship. 

In addition, with Emory women’s tennis player Lorne McManigle’s win in the women’s singles tournament, it marks the third time in NCAA Division III history that the men’s and women’s individual champion has come from the same school.  Principia’s Toby Clark and Courtney Allen accomplished the feat in both 1985 and 1987.

EMORY’S MICHAEL GOODWIN ADVANCES TO FINALS AT NCAA SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS

(May 23) – Emory University senior Michael Goodwin captured his semifinal round match at the NCAA Division III Men's Singles Championship Saturday evening and will play in the title match on Sunday afternoon.

Goodwin, seeded No. 5 in the 32-player field, edged Conrad Olson of Middlebury College,
6-4, 5-7, 6-2, setting the stage for Sunday's clash against Ben Stein of Bates College. Stein advanced to the championship match after upending No. 1 seed John Kauss of Gustavus Adolphus in straight sets.

Action begins at 3:00 p.m. (EDT) Sunday afternoon from the campus of Claremont-Mudd Scripps. Goodwin will be looking to become the first Emory men's player to take home the D-III singles championship.

(May 14) While competing at the Gregory Invitational, Emory University’s Melissa Jones broke her own school record in the 10,000-meter run.  The senior’s time of 37:09.59 was good for a NCAA provisional qualifying mark and a second-place finish.  Jones bested her previous school-record time of 37:50.25, set earlier in the season.  Action at the Gregory Invitational in Naperville, IL will continue throughout the day on Friday.

(May 9) – The No. 2-ranked Emory men’s tennis team will battle undefeated and No. 23-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan in third round action of the NCAA Division III men's tennis tournament. Sunday's action at the Woodruff PE Center begins at noon.

Emory ran its record to 18-3 earlier in the day with a 5-0 decision over Hampden-Sydney. The Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan advanced to the third round following a 5-1 triumph over No. 17-ranked Mary Washington, raising their season record to 15-0.

The winner of the Emory-North Carolina Wesleyan match advances to the NCAA National Championships next weekend in Claremont, Calif.

EMORY MEN’S TENNIS TO BATTLE HAMPDEN-SYDNEY

(May 8) - The No. 2-ranked Emory men's tennis team will open NCAA Regional action on Saturday against Hampden-Sydney. HSC advanced to the second round on Friday with a 5-1 triumph over Transylvania, raising its record to 14-5.

Emory will entertain the Tigers with a 17-3 won-lost mark. Action at the Woodruff PE Center begins at 11:00 a.m. Following the Emory-HSC match, Mary Washington will take on North Carolina Wesleyan. The winners meet on Sunday at noon to see who will advance to next week's NCAA Quarterfinals.


EMORY SOFTBALL BEATS NEUMANN COLLEGE IN NCAA ACTION

(May 8) - Emory senior Kim Bandy socked a pair of home runs and totaled four RBIs while freshman Jessica Thomas hit a solo blast to spark Emory to a 6-0 win over Neumann College on Friday afternoon in NCAA Regional action in Salisbury, MD.

Bandy went 3-for-4 at the plate while Thomas, senior Liz White and junior Cassie Walsh all chipped in with two hits apiece as Emory totaled 13 safeties in the contest.

Freshman Bridget Holloway notched her 10th win in 11 decisions as she tossed the opening three innings, allowing four hits and striking out four.

The win raised Emory's record to 2-0 in regional play and to 32-10 overall. The Eagles will play on Saturday against either Lynchburg or Bridgewater at 2:00 p.m..


FYFFE RECORDS PROVISIONAL QUALIFYING TIME AT THE DR. KEELER INVITATIONAL

(May 8) Emory University’s Tommy Fyffe, one of four Eagles competing in the distance events at the Dr. Keeler Invitational at North Central College in Naperville, IL, recorded a provisional qualifying time in the 5,000-meter run on Thursday.

(May 7) - Emory freshman Jessica Thomas came through with a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring pinch runner Jenna Lamoreaux and giving the Eagles a 1-0 win over LaGrange College in the opening game of the NCAA Regional in Salisbury, Maryland.

(May 7) Two members of the Emory University baseball team were honored for their performance both in the classroom and on the field, as shortstop Andrew Cohn was named to the ESPN The Magazine/ CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team, and pitcher Matt Ryckman was named to the second team.

(May 6)  The Emory University track and field team will take part in its first meets since the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, as the Eagles will send representatives to the Dr. Keeler Invitational in Naperville, IL on Thursday and the Orange and Purple Classic in Clemson, SC on Saturday.
