EMORY ATHLETICS FINISH SIXTH IN DIRECTOR’S CUP

Division III Final Standings

(June 19) - Emory University’s Department of Athletics finished sixth in the 2008-09 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Division III standings, as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). The Director's Cup recognizes overall excellence in athletic programs.

The sixth-place finish marks the Eagles’ ninth-straight top-10 appearance –2000-01 (fourth), 2001-02 (fifth), 2002-03 (second), 2003-04 (second), 2004-05 (eighth), 2005-06 (fourth), 2006-07 (ninth), 2007-08 (seventh).  Emory, which stood eighth following the winter standings, registered a final mark of 809 points, its highest total since 2003-04 (811 pts.).

Emory had 13 teams compete in NCAA Tournament action during the 2008-09 season while also claiming a total of six University Athletic Association championships.

The Eagles had six overall top-10 finishes in the 2008-09 Director’s Cup standings: volleyball (first), men’s swimming and diving (second), women’s swimming and diving (second), men’s tennis (third), women’s tennis (third) and men’s soccer (ninth).

Williams College (Mass.) won its 11th-consecutive Directors' Cup and 13th in the last 14 years with 1,066.50 points. Middlebury (923 points), Amherst (910 points), Washington University (873 points) and Cortland State (861 points) rounded out the top five.

Emory, along with Williams College and The College of New Jersey, are the only other institutions to have finished among the top 10 teams in the Director’s Cup standings in each of the last nine years.

The Learfield Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the NACDA and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine women’s and nine men’s.
