Joan Reed MAT, ATC, CSCS – Assistant Director of Athletics and Recreation for Sports Medicine
Reed is the Head Athletic Trainer at Emory University. Prior to taking over the helm in December 2000. Reed served as the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Emory since September 1998. Before joining the Emory Sports Medicine Team Reed was employed at HealthSouth, Mariner Sports Medicine and Pinnacle Sports Medicine, all of which are located in Atlanta. Reed a native of Steubenville, Ohio, holds a Masters of Arts in Teaching from the University of Louisville (1990). At Louisville Reed served as Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer. She received a Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training from Ohio University in 1988.
In conjunction with serving as the Head Athletic Trainer at Emory she is a guest lecturer at Georgia State University in the Graduate Sport Medicine Program and has been a guest lecturer for the Emory University Physical Therapy Program. Joan has presented at the Georgia Athletic Trainers Association Annual Symposium as well as the Southeastern Athletic Trainers Association Annual Symposium. In addition, she has worked part- time for the United States Soccer Federation since 1991. Reed served as a volunteer athletic trainer at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in the summer of 1994 as well as the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Joan also was the Head Athletic Trainer for the United States women's soccer team at the 2007 Pan-American Games in Brazil.
She has been a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association since 1988. Reed is a certified member of the National Strength and Conditioning
Association and a licensed athletic trainer in the state of Georgia.
Joan currently resides in Clarkston, Georgia with her dog Chuck Norris. She enjoys
running, mountain biking and playing soccer.

John Dunham – Assistant Athletics Trainer
John Dunham was named assistant athletics trainer at Emory University in October of 2007. His appointment marks his second stint at the university. Dunham is a guest lecturer in the Emory University Physical Therapy Program at Georgia State University in the Graduate Sport Medicine Program. In addition, Dunham works part time for the Georgia Force in the Arena Football League.
After his first stay at Emory (2001-05), Dunham served as the Director of Sports Medicine at Multi Sport Orthotics. At Multi Sport Orthotics, Dunham was responsible for implementation and management of national sports medicine program as well as patient care and fabrication of orthotic devices.
Dunham served as the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Emory University from 2001 through 2005. In conjunction with serving as the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Emory, Dunham was an instructor in the Health, Physical Education, and Dance Department.
A Native of Memphis, Dunham earned his Masters of Science in Sports Administration from Eastern Kentucky University (Richmond) in 1999. While at EKU Dunham served as a Graduate Assistant in the Athletic and Recreation Department. Dunham received his Bachelor of Science in Health and Human Performance with a concentration in Wellness Promotion from Austin Peay State University (Clarksville, TN) in 1998. While earning his BS Dunham served as a student Athletic Trainer for 4 years.
Dunham is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and licensed in the state of Georgia.
John, his wife Lulie and their daughter Maggie and son Walker currently reside in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Dunham is an avid golfer.

Mitch Gill, ATC - Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer
Mitch is also a first year graduate assistant athletic trainer and has grown up in nearby Snellville, GA. He studied at Valdosta State University (Valdosta, GA), and worked during his last semester at Valdosta State as an Athletic Training intern at Emory University, before graduating in May 2008 with his B.S. in Athletic Training/Sports Medicine. Currently he is attending Georgia State University (Atlanta, GA) and is expected to graduate in May 2010 with a M.S. in Sports Medicine.
Although he has just begun his professional career as an athletic trainer, he has already volunteered his time in 2008 at the Georgia ING Marathon and the Peachtree Road Race.
Mitch can be found having fun playing sports, weightlifting, watching football, and has been a long-time Braves fan. He currently resides in Snellville.

Nick Holloway, ATC - Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer
Nick is a first year graduate assistant athletic trainer who grew up in Brooklyn, MI. He graduated with a B.S. in Athletic Training from Eastern Kentucky University (Richmond, KY) in May of 2008. He is currently attending Georgia State University (Atlanta, GA) and is expected to graduate in May 2010 with a M.S. in Sports Medicine.
Before he had finished his undergraduate work, he volunteered at several events including the Touchstone Energy-All “A” Classic Basketball tournament, and the 17th Annual Southeastern Cross Country Classic.
Nick finds time to relax by exercising and spending time with friends, but loves to play or watch hockey whenever he has a chance. He currently lives in Marietta.

Chris Loubier, ATC – Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer
Chris is a second year graduate assistant athletic trainer who grew up in Tipp City, OH. He went to do his undergraduate work at Urbana University (Urbana, OH). In 2006, he received the NAIA Student Athletic Trainer of the Year award, and then graduated with a B.S. in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training in May 2007. He is expected to graduate in May 2009 from Georgia State University (Atlanta, GA) with a M.S. in Sports Medicine.
Chris has volunteered his time to multiple athletic events. In 2007 he worked at the Peachtree Road Race, and DeKalb County football games held at Adam’s Stadium. In 2008, he volunteered at the Georgia ING Marathon, has worked with two of the U.S. Soccer Youth National soccer teams in March and June, and again worked the Peachtree Road Race.
Chris enjoys a wide variety of outdoor activities in his free time, but especially enjoys soccer and water sports. He currently lives in Buckhead, with his 2 cats (Arrow and Shadow).

Gina Shipman, ATC – Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer
Gina is a second year graduate assistant athletic trainer who comes from a small town in Missouri called Bunker (population 427). She did her undergraduate work at Culver-Stockton College (Canton, MO) and graduated in May of 2007. Now she is pursuing a M.S. in Sports Medicine degree at Georgia State University (Atlanta, GA) and is expected to graduate in May 2009.
She has also volunteered her time and athletic training services at numerous events. In 2007, she worked the Atlanta Marathon, Peachtree Road Race, and the USA Judo International Championships. Then, in 2008, she has worked with 3 of the US Soccer Youth National Teams in April, May, and June, in addition to working the Georgia ING Marathon, Peachtree Road Race, and the 6th Annual Action Cycling-200 Charity Bike Ride.
In her spare time, Gina enjoys hiking, finding new music, and is now training for a charity bike ride that takes place in April 2009. She currently lives with her 2-year-old dog named Brinkley in Midtown.

Chip Hewgley, MPT – Physical Therapist
Hewgley has been a staff physical therapist at Emory Sports Medicine since 2002. A native of Oak Ridge, TN. Hewgley earned his Master’s of Physical Therapy from The University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences (St. Augustine, FL) in 2000. Hewgley received his Bachelor’s of Science in Sports Performance from Berry College (Rome, GA) in 1996. While at Berry, Hewgley was a member of the Varsity Baseball Team.
Before coming to Emory Sports Medicine, Hewgley spent two years with the Atlanta Braves as the organization’s physical therapist. Hewgley is currently working towards a specialty certification in Sports Physical Therapy as well as a Manual Therapy certification. Hewgley’s special interests include working with throwing athletes with shoulder and elbow injuries. Hewgley is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association – Sports Section and is licensed in the State of Georgia.

Chip, his wife Veronica, their daughter Hannah, and their dogs Paddy and Tasha currently reside in Woodstock, GA. Hewgley enjoys running, lifting weights, and fishing.
